Abstract

Instruction is distinct from teaching but often conflated, particularly in Online Schools and Digital Programs. In this paper, we discuss four ways of framing online/digital instruction (individualization, differentiation, personalization, and presence) and discuss the implications for each. We also highlight the challenges of expecting that technological engineering and design will resolve persistent issues with digital instruction. In fact, there are harms in subjecting students, particularly historically under served populations, to constant data draws.
